Mansfield is a prosperous Nottinghamshire market town that still has one of the largest open-air markets in the country. Coal and cotton were once the main products’ but it is also known for its hosiery industry. Recently, Mansfield has undergone many new developments bringing it into the 21st century.
Mansfield has a long history, which is given a mention in the Domesday Book. It was given its market charter in the 13th century, but the town was fairly isolated throughout the Middle Ages. Much of the land was under ownership of the Royal household, the majority of it being forest area. With the rise in farming throughout the 18th century, the Mansfield area began to develop rapidly, spurred on even more by the coming of the railways and industry in the 19th century. Mansfield’s main sources of industry over the last couple of centuries have included quarrying, coal mining and of course the Mansfield Brewery, which is still as successful and as popular as ever. It is close to the Derbyshire border making the Peak District easily accessible, as are the cities of Derby and Nottingham and a whole host of tourist attractions.
