Castle Bromwich was part of the parish of Aston until 1894 and is recorded as Bramewice in 1168 and Bromwice in 1199. The name Bromwich means "settlement in the broom", broom being a yellow flowering bush that grew in abundance in the area. Castle is a Middle English addition to the name to distinguish the settlement from the other bromwiches in the area.
The castle was a 12th century wooden motte and bailey construction to the north of the church. The remains of the motte can still be seen today, between the M6 and the Collector Road and is known locally as "Pimple Hill". There was an extensive archaeological dig of the "Pimple Site" prior to the construction of the Collector Road in the 1970s.
Castle Bromwich is a recent name for this area of the city. It used be called Berwood for hundreds of years. For years Berwood or Castle Bromwich was a small village on the outskirts of the expanding Birmingham. It was also poor quality land and prone to flooding. During war years there was an airfield at Castle Bromwich.
Spitfires were made at Castle Bromwich by Vickers and two shadow factories produced much of the needed aircraft replenishments for the armed forces. At their peak over 300 new spitfire units per month were being built here. Testing for the planes took place on the airfield. Between the wars the airfield was used for a variety of events and Castle Bromwich had once hoped that it would have been chosen as the site for Birmingham Airport.
The parish has approximately 12000 residents and is well served by public transport, churches and schools catering for all age groups and it's location provides easy access to major road routes. Castle Bromwich retains its village character but is very active. There are playing fields that have a sports centre which supports cricket, football, golf and tennis clubs. There are three primary, one specialist and one secondary school(s). There are two main shopping areas, several smaller ones and numerous small businesses.
